Bentley Continental R, model year 1994

The Bentley Continental R was a large, ultra exclusive, luxury coupé made by Bentley from 1991 to 2003. It was the first Bentley to feature a body not shared with a Rolls-Royce model since the S3 Continental of 1965, the first to use the GM 4L80-E transmission, and the fastest, most expensive, and most powerful Bentley of its day. It was also the most expensive production car in the world at launch.

Condition of the car

The current mileage (KM’s!!!) is 83,731  which there is evidence to prove this is genuine. The paintwork is in perfect condition, interior in Mulliner style. The engine starts right away and is running perfectly. A massive history file comes with the car going into minute detail the works carried out. This is certainly a car to fall in love with! The asking price is 68.000 euro.

Team Bienemann / Roos achieved 3rd place in Expert class of the DHRC Challenge Championship 2016.

It was a beautiful autumn-colored tour through the North-western part of the Dutch Veluwe, an area Toni and Edwin know very well. Leading to high speeds in the morning and some time penalties (26 minutes), which was negligable compared to the other participants.

The team managed to finish first most of the time even though having starting number 4.

All in all again an excellent result in the DHRC!

The equippe Bienemann/Roos driving for the first national Rolls-Royce & Bentley museum/Hooper International/Peja Group has finished on a 3rd position in the SLS rallye (formerly Scheveningen Luxemburg Scheveningen now Spa Luxembourg Scheveningen) in the category sport.

The rallye went through the Ardennes, Luxembourg, Lorraine to Verdun and back through Belgium‎, Eindhoven, Baarle-Nassau to Scheveningen.

The car of choice was the Silver Cloud III, Mulliner Park Ward Fixed Head Coupe “Chinese eyes” with 6.25 liter‎ displacement.

For next year the equippe will compete in the expert category!

The Equippe Bienemann/Roos finished second in Expert Class in their Rolls Royce Silver Cloud III FHC (‘chinese eyes’) in a rally in autumn setting. It was a foggy clamp day, single digit Celsius, in the Brabantia province starting and finishing in Uden‎, passing areas like St Michelsgestel, medieval fortified city Ravensteyn, the peat colonies, various Brabant forrest, Waal river outskirts, Wilhelmina canal and the vast rural areas which characterise this province

Participants Toni Bienemann (Hooper International) and Edwin Roos drove a few thousand miles through the inland of China with a 1965 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III, below their report.

Prepara‎tion
Upon arrival we went to the traffic police office in Bejing airport. After a medical check we received our Chinese temporary driver’s licence. (The necessary explanation of Chinese traffic rules as far as deviant from the international jurisdiction forms part of the procedure. Instructions on that were given the next day by a traffic officer).
We were lodged afterwards for the coming three days  in a hug‎e resort north of Bejing ( whichs’ surface is a mere 185x165km, 22million inhabitants). The resort consists of several huge hotel blocks (300×300 meters) which each holding a capacity of over a 1000 rooms with function, convention and ball rooms of a size unknown in Europe. The blocks are connected by monorail trains some 8 meters above ground level, unfortunately not in operation anymore.‎ Possibly the initial function of the complex for gatherings of the numerous delegates and elite party members of the communist party, now somewhat more sparingly used for that purpose.

The following day we ‎went to collect the cars from a nearby warehouse and we became acquainted to our fellow rallye participants. Of the approximately 45 teams, 3 are European (one couple from Belgium, one from Germany and one from The Netherlands). Ten couples are from Hong Kong (mostly Members of the Hong Kong Classic Car Society) with 4 britisch nationals, a french couple and 6 Hong Kong or Guandong nationals. The remaning 30 or so equippes being mainland Chinese.

After a technical inspection of the vehicles in the afternoon, we received our local number plates.

The next day a photo session in the morning was done on one of the very wide parking lots/parade avenues. Later during the day was for a sightseeing tour to the Forbidden City and the Summer Palace (a one and a half hour drive from our northern hot springs resort to the center of Bejing).

The Cars
A colorful mix of cars. The Hong Kong teams often entering with youngtimers and renowned classics like BMW M3, 635CSI, Porsche Carrera, 356, Mercedes R107 500sl AMG, W108, W111 280 SE coupe, W 140 500 CL, Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and III, Corniche Convertible‎, MG, Subaru, Jaguar E-type (first series with the 4.2 liter engine, only some 600 produced, Lancia Delta Integrale in full Rallye gear and Martini livery.

‎From the European side a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III (us), a beautiful Mercedes Pagode 280 SL and a Volkswagen Karmann Ghia.

The Chinese teams having a variety of vehicles, young timers and renowned classics as above and some very authentic vehicles of Chinese build like the Shanghai and a magnificent sixties HonqQui (Red Flag) which can compete in size and impressiveness with most post war luxury brands like Bentley, Rolls-Royce, Cadillac and Lincoln.

We are on the road!

After an early briefing at 7.00h we commenced our way to Badaling, one of the three enter points to climb the Chinese wall. At the foot of the wall  the opening ceremony draws a good audience of the tourists.

The roadbook is the dot-arrow system with control points and time checks. Today we drive a span of 7 hours to Baoting.

We continue our route through the beautiful mountains of Badaling. A varied landscape with canyons, karst formations, Mediterranean-style stone mountains with sparse vegetation, then areas with lush red ivy.

Further south a sudde‎n burst of flowers lining the road. The first few miles we expected it to end in a village or resort. We did not know then that this flower lining would accompany us for the next  150km! In the midst of it the reason was revealed. A huge leisure resort and flat like billboards, explaining the governmental touristic development p‎lan with the size of a small European country.

The more we approache Baoting the denser the traffic, and we had to speed up to finish in the right time window. The window is: if you are 1 second or more to early, you will have severe point deduction starting with 100 going up to 5000. You can enter neutral within a five second window. Late(r) arrival in the first five minutes will give light penalty points (10)‎, getting higher the later one arrives up to 5000.

‎After ten days of crossing China in our Rolls-Royce, the Classic Cars Challenge China (4C) 2016 has left an indelible impression on us. The rally system (dot-arrow) was not too difficult, but finishing in a metropolis is not easy. The road network around the cities in China is particularly challenging with a tangle of turns and so it also happened to us to take a wrong turn the last day. Result: more than 1 hour late and 5,000 penalty.

Especially the Hong Kong car Club members were doing well. So again a competitive field in this internationall rallye. Maximum concentration (also on the sometimes chaotic traffic) is the motto, every second counts! We have ended this wonderful 4C rally with a 14th place.

All concerns about transporting the car by boat to China were in vain; the car was neatly transported and delivered in Beijng. Last Thursday, the car was already picked up for transport to the port of Shanghai for transport to Rotterdam.

The ‘Twenty’

The introduction of a smaller Rolls-Royce – the 20hp – in 1922 enabled the company to cater for the increasingly important owner-driver market that appreciated the quality of Rolls-Royce engineering but did not need a car as large as a 40/50hp Ghost or Phantom. The ‘Twenty’ proved eminently suited to town use, yet could cope admirably with Continental touring when called upon. Its successor, the 20/25hp, introduced in 1929, up-dated the concept with significant improvements, featuring an enlarged (from 3,127 to 3,669cc) and more-powerful cross-flow version of the Twenty’s six-cylinder, overhead-valve engine. Produced concurrently with the Phantom II, the 20/25 benefited from many of the larger model’s improvements, such as synchromesh gears and centralised chassis lubrication, becoming the best-selling Rolls-Royce of the inter-war period.

Park Ward’s handsome

This example boasts Park Ward’s handsome, Continental-style, owner-driver coachwork, which is exceptionally pleasing and typical of its day. The car’s accompanying (copy) chassis cards record that it was delivered new in 1935 to Mr R G Connelly, while there is correspondence on file relating to various subsequent owners. The vendor purchased the car at auction in 2007, when it was imported into The Netherlands. Subject of much loving attention while in previous ownership, ‘GLG28’ had already benefited from an engine bottom-end overhaul (1968), complete interior re-trim (1980), brake and steering overhaul (1981), wheels re-spoked and stove-enamelled (1981) and a top-end overhaul, including new cylinder head, in 1983; this last is an important point as the model is prone to ’head trouble in old age. Previously maintained by West Hoathly Garage and since 1990 by Sargeants of Goudhurst, the car has further benefited from an engine rebuild and radiator re-core (1991) and a suspension overhaul and new clutch in 1999, since when fewer than 2,000 miles have been covered. ‘GLG28’ is offered complete with original fitted luggage, invoices dating back to 2007 (plus one from 1968), expired MoTs dating back to 1990, (photocopy) old-style logbook, current road fund licence and Swansea V5 document.

Condition of the car

The current mileage is 24,000 which there is evidence to suggest this is genuine. The paintwork is in perfect order in cream over black, after a total respray in 2014. The engine starts right away and is running perfectly. A massive history file comes with the car going into minute detail the works carried out. This is certainly a car to fall in love with! 3rd place Dutch Historic Rallye Championship

This weekend the Bienemann/Roos team became 4th in the Tour de Gazet resulting in a 3th place ranking in the Dutch Historic Rallye Championship.

During Interclassics Maastricht in January 2016 Toni Bienemann and Edwin Roos were awarded the third place overal, sporting, of the Dutch Historing Rally Championship 2015. Cars: Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III 2 door saloon Muliner Park Ward (chinese eyes) and Bentley T1 4 door saloon. Following a formal dinner afterwards with the board of the DHRC commemorable and happy m‎oments of the past rally season were exchanged.
